And breeeeaaaaattttthhhhheeee

So it’s 2020…a whole new year, a whole new decade.

And so it has begun.

The TV and internet is full of all that New Year, New Start bullshit…diets, exercise plans, dry January, veganuary….basically become a completely different person overnight.

Enough already.

It’s 100% OK to make some changes if you want to…but come on let’s ease our way into the new year hey?

Here are 5 eassssyyyy things you can do to make 2020 a good year for your health and wellbeing without being all gun-ho about it now.

One – Have a good old clear-out

January is a great time for a bit of decluttering. Make space in your home, and in your mind for the new stuff that you want to come into your life. Clear out all those clothes you never wear, the diet books that just make you feel shit, the food that’s about to go out of date.

While having a clear-out you might want to upgrade a few items, or at least make a list of the things that need replacing. Have a sort out of your fitness clothes too…you may want to use them at some point.

I recently culled my running kit by half by having a big clear out and donating what I didn’t need.

Two – Have a bit of a brainstorm

What do you want to do more of this year? Make a list. I do something called a 100 list. I literally keep a list of 100 things I wouldn’t mind trying. It’s a fun thing to do with kids and partners too.

There is no pressure to tick them off, it’s just a place to go for inspiration when you have time to kill, or an adventure itch to scratch. This is also the perfect time to look at races you might want to do. We are doing a bit of a road trip in March to go to the Limassol Half Marathon…drop me a line if you fancy joining us.

Three – Set some goals

I am not a massive believer in SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timebased) I am more likely to set BIG FAT STUPID GOALS, goals which force you to make exponential leaps into the new version of you.

But do what works for you.

The thing with a goal is you don’t have to know all of the steps to make a commitment, but as long as you are committed to taking action and working out what you need to do next, you are all good.

Four – Get some support

And no I’m not talking about a sports bra (but actually not a bad idea if you don’t have a good one, I just bought one of these for the new year ahead)

But here’s the thing, when we want to make changes or even just sustain our healthy/active habits we rarely do it alone. We need support from our loved ones, and sometimes from professionals…but that support doesn’t happen by chance.

So think about what support is missing from your life, and think about how you can communicate your need for it, and get them in place

  • Childcare
  • A running buddy
  • A running club
  • A coach (running or life)
  • A physio
  • A nutritionist

Five – Sign up for a programme

This is my fav (of course)

Every year as well as delivering a range of online programmes I also take part in many myself. I need the focus. I need the challenge. I need the support.

2020 marks the 10 year anniversary of The Fat Girls Guide to Running, and we have some incredible things planned for the year…but I am easing my way in. There really is no rush. Take your time, be kind to yourself, and don’t burn out. January can be a harsh month, so do what feels right for you.

Full disclaimer: It’s the 3rd of January and I have barely left the house let alone gone for a run. I have had a chest infection over the Xmas period, so I am in no rush to get out there. FYI the world has not come to an end because I haven’t started with my fitness goals for 2020 yet
