How does a ‘virtual running club work’?

Just like a traditional one really but without ever having to be at the back of the pack. We send you a weekly training session via email (and posted in the Facebook group) which you can do alone and feed back on, or arrange to meet with women in your local area…whichever suits you that week.

You can also use the Too Fat to Run coaches and other members as a sounding board to ask advice, find training buddies and get support when things get tough. You have a library full of training sessions, downloadable plans, videos etc that you can dip in and out of when you like to.

Who are the coaches?

Julie Creffield is a running and mindset coach who works virtually with overweight and inactive women all over the world who want to improve their health and happiness, without the overbearing focus on weight loss. She helps women to move from feeling stuck, unconfident and unconnected in the running world and sometimes more generally in life, to enthusiastic, hopeful and happy athletes. Within The Clubhouse there are also a number of England Athletics qualifies coaches who chip in, and also we invite guest experts from a range of industries, everything from hypnotherapists to nutritionists, stylists to happiness and confidence coaches.

I’m a total beginner, will the training be too much for me?

Our weekly training session suggestions can be adapted for all levels as we have walkers, joggers and runners in our tribe. Not every session will suit where you are on your journey, but there will be some fall back ones that you can rely on time and time again, as all sessions are stored in our resources area so that you gain confidence planning and implementing your own programme

Do I have to be a certain size to be a member?

No. We have women of all shapes and sizes, everything from a size 10 to a size 30. Some women are on weight loss journeys and others have found peace with their size and focus on being the healthiest, happiest version of themselves. All bodies are celebrated.

I’ve heard that running overweight is bad for your joints etc. Should I lose some weight before I start trying to run?

We always encourage our members to listen to their bodies and build up gradually. Running in bad shoes, and on hard surfaces as a beginner carrying a lot of weight can of course cause injuries. This is especially true if you don’t take care to warm up or you go too fast or too far, too soon. There’s lot of evidence that says running can actually strengthen the muscles that support your joints and some exercise has to be better than none.

I am afraid that everyone will know each other already, or be better runners than me…what if I don’t fit in?

We have a wide range of different personalities in the group, the one thing everyone has in common though is how friendly and supportive they are to newbies. We celebrate all achievements, even if thats just getting your trainers on and leaving the house, or making the first step by buying some running shoes. Women in the Facebook group get involved in different ways, some post every day, others every now and again and some just enjoy reading everyone else’s posts. The main thing is to be present and take part in ways that inspire you to be active.

Shouldn’t running be FREE? Why do you charge?

Running clubs are often FREE or for a small charge because they are run by volunteers. This is Julie’s job and her work is very specialist. She has more than 20 years experience of supporting people to achieve their goals and she believes that by you paying for this service this acts as an incentive for you to actually use it and make the most out of it. £79 for the year is about the price of a cup of tea each week, yet members get enormous value  from having access to Julie’s experience, inspiration and of course all of the resources she creates for her community

“Six months ago, I couldn’t have even contemplated being able to run.

I’ve gone from being out of breath from just 5mins of walking to running 5km!”
