Did I ever tell you the sad tale of the running machine that lived behind my front room door?
Ok, here it is….
A few years back I thought it would be a good idea to buy a running machine, I’m not exactly sure what prompted it because I didn’t have any children at that point or anything else that prevented me from running outside whenever I wanted, but nether the less I bought it, a cheap running machine which when it arrived was a lot bigger than I imagined. Hmm???
For a while it lived in my spare room, and I did use it a few times…but soon realised that I much preferred running outside, but I would never admitted that to anyone, especially anyone who had warned me not to buy one in the first place…as now I was stuck with it. I kept telling myself when I got a bigger place I would have my own gym and use it then, but that never really happened as my daughter came along and the option to move disappeared…and the running machine moved promptly behind my front room door where it stayed for the following 12 months until I sold it for peanuts…well not peanuts, money, but barely enough money to keep me in peanuts for very long.
The moral of the story?
Only buy gym equipment if you know you are actually going to use it and only if you have space to keep it in you home…or better still don’t buy it at all, hire it instead.
The irony of this whole thing is now I don’t have childcare in the evenings or at weekends I really could do with a running machine at home, and I am so desperate to run some nights that I would happily have it in the middle of my front room, so when Hire Fitness got in touch and asked me if I would be interested in reviewing one of their fitness machines for FREE I jumped at the chance.
Hire Fitness began back in 2001 in Berkshire, after the birth of the founder Paul Healey’s first child, his wife wanted to return to shape after her pregnancy but they quickly realised that the cost of purchasing a high quality piece of fitness equipment was unaffordable. He took the opportunity to fill that gap and Hire Fitness was born.
After the success of my pilot office, we very quickly grew and now have the whole of the UK and Ireland covered with Hire Fitness sales offices. We’re clear market leaders with 15 franchises across UK and Ireland and wider Europe coming on board with France being the first. I’m proud to say we’re now the largest company in the world hiring gym quality fitness equipment.
I loved the premise because in life things change so rapidly and so often we buy things on a whim only to be left trying to flog them for a quarter of the price to some other pore soul who will go on to do the same in a few months time when their life changes too.
So how does it work?
You selected your piece of equipment, it gets delivered by friendly delivery staff who actually know about the piece of kit, who help you set it up and test it, and you keep it for anything from 4 weeks upwards, and then you send it back when you are done…how cool is that.
I know how a running machine works, and I have a spin bike at home…yet a vibration plate is one of those weird bits of kit you’re always a bit embarrassed to use at the gym, but you know it will do you good if you did use it regularly. Plus I knew it wasn’t something I would want to own forever….unless I did have my own gym at home (one day Julie, one day)
So it was arranged and my Deluxe Home Vibration plate ideal for those who want the perfect body, but don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to working out arrived, and as promised the two guys who delivered it were very friendly and helpful in showing me how it all works.
Arrrrgghhhhhh the noise I thought when I first gave it a go….whatever are the neighbours going to think with all that vibrating going on. This had better be worth it right?
So what do they actually do?
Vibration plates provides a calorie-burning result that reduces the appearance of cellulite, tones your body and enhances bone density. As one of the most powerful vibration plates on the market today (no wonder my whole flat felt like it was trembling), this model includes straps for upper body work, and an onboard computer which allows you to set the intensity according to your preference.
So I did a short 20 minute work out and could see straight away where the benefits in this would be. But here is where the fun began…
We worked out for about 45 minutes and I swear its one of the best workouts I’ve ever had. I could really feel it the following day, especially my core…do you know you can plank on a vibration plate?
Anyway, I loved having the machine at my disposal even if I decided it was only appropriate to use it during daylight hours. I live in a second floor apartment and I didn’t think it was fair on my neighbours to be vibrating the night away….as they do make a bit of noise.
Like all new bits of kit, the novelty did wear off a bit after the first week, but knowing I only had it for a limited time did make sure I jumped back on it from time to time, if only for short bursts of squats and lunges. And last week I felt particularly achy after a long training run and used it for a back massage which really helped.
So my 12 weeks are almost up, and I promised an honest review in exchange for a free trial, so my final verdict is I absolutely love Hire Fitness and think that many women would have a reason to hire rather than buy (lack of childcare, temporary accommodation, training for a specific event, coming back off injury), however despite the fact I enjoyed using the vibration plate over the last few weeks I am looking forward to them coming to pick it up so that I can have my front room back.
I am glad I tested the plate rather than anything else they have on offer because I now have the confidence to use one in the gym, I know I don’t really want one of my own and the main point in all of this is I am not left with an expensive bit of kit that I am not going to use at least 3 times a week for the foreseeable future.
Hire fitness you guys rock and as proof of that they would like to offer my readers an exclusive 55% off their first months hire.

Seriously guys, if you are thinking about buying a piece of exercise kit why not trial it first to see if you are actually going to use it.
What have you got to lose?
